DAY 3: Taking Action

On your blog, tell us which one of the videos you liked the best and why.

I Like the Taranaki Mounga Project because many birds in New Zealand had endangered by predators and that 24 million bird have been gone. This is why predators need to out of the world because so many birds can die. I'm not interested in this because there are many predators that need to go. I like this
video because many animals need our help and it's our job to help endangered animals such as birds.

Hi Ana,

It's Leslie here, a member of the Summer Learning Journey team.

I'm so glad that you took the time to do this activity! You've chosen a good video to discuss and I agree with you that it's a tragedy that so many native bird species have died because of the predators that were introduced from other countries.

One of the fascinating things about your country is that there were no native mammals, other than bats, living in New Zealand before people arrived from Europe. Many of your birds species built their nests on the ground because there weren't any animals threatening their young.

In Canada we have always had any number of bird predators so that birds have had to be very ingenious in where and how they build their nests. Some build them on the sides of mountains, on steep cliffs. Others build them at the very tops of trees, or under bridges. Birds are very good at attempting to lay their eggs in safe places, aren't they?

I hope that the different projects in place in your beautiful country can be successful so that your bird populations can increase, not decrease.

I'm glad that you've taken an interest in this and that you're learning so much through the Summer Learning Journey program. Good for you!

I'll continue to read your blog!!

Cheers,

Leslie
